This weekend, the SailGP, a sailing Grand Prix of cutting-edge, foiling F50 catamarans – capable of incredible speeds in excess of 60mph – will visit Lake Michigan in front of the Chicago skyline for the first time.
If you are looking for weekend plans, an adventure for Father’s Day, this event cannot be missed. SailGP’s site has full information, and tickets here.
Travel Today recently had the opportunity to get up close to these foiling F50 catamarans at the last SailGP event in Bermuda several weeks ago. The sights, the sounds, and the adventure of SailGP is incredible for everyone from a casual fan to the experienced sailor.
The event, “T-Mobile United States Sail Grand Prix | Chicago at Navy Pier” will be taking place for the first time in Chicago, and the location will allow for picture perfect viewing of the competition right on the water. SailGP has already been on site in Chicago by supporting youth sailing activities and work experiences, both on and off the water. The program, Inspire, is the global league’s community outreach program, which engages youth between the ages nine to 23 years old to increase accessibility to the sport of sailing in a multifaceted environment, presenting pathways for future elite athletes and career development.
This weekend’s festivities kick off Saturday, June 17 at 12pm when the Race Village opens to public. The actually competitions take place from 2:00pm-3:30pm. On Sunday June 19, the village opens again at 12pm, and the competitions kickoff at 2:00pm and end at 3:30pm.
