The Biggest Problem for Frequent Flyers SOLVED!

Today’s business travelers are busier than ever before and anything that can make life easier, or save money, is a must have.

One of the biggest problems I have as a frequent flyer, is coming home to my apartment in New York City after a 7 day trip and it is stuffy, stale air, and either hot in the summer, or freezing in the winter. I think I may have found a solution to this problem that every traveler can relate too, and I wanted to share it with you here.

Travel Today recently had the opportunity to review the Dyson Pure: hot + cool link which claims to offer heating, cooling, and air purification with the added convenience of a smartphone app. I was very skeptical of a small product that could do so much, so I decided to give it a test run.

I recently had to travel to Florida for a shoot, and I installed the unit before leaving. Because I am trying to save money, and be environmentally friendly, I shut off my central air conditioning unit. Fast forward a week, and I am about to fly back to New York. I opened up the dyson Link App and kicked on the air purification + cooling.

When I stepped into my apartment, it was magical. The air was so crisp, cool, and circulated. It smelled perfectly fresh as if someone had just cleaned my apartment. I hate the smells of air fresheners, so having clean air that is void of any smell was a pleasant delight.

The product also claims to get rid of allergens, pollutants and gases from the air.

Overall, this is hands down one of the best air purifiers I have ever owned. It is extremely quiet and runs nicely in the background.

Excellence in Dining: Steak 48 in Chicago

Located in Chicago’s River North neighborhood, Steak 48 dazzles and impresses diners with an impressive menu and service.

Travel Today recently had the opportunity to dine at the brand new Steak 48, and we were left speechless from the incredible meal. Our experience began at a fantastic table situated adjacent to the glass enclosed kitchen. Here, patrons are provided a sneak preview of the impressive culinary skill from the culinary team under Chef Marc Lupino.

The interiors of the 12,000+ sq ft restaurant are stunning. The decor and added music create a unique ambiance to make everyone feel comfortable.

When visiting, you must try the fresh seafood tower, and the superfood salad to start. For main entrees, we recommend steak farina, or inquiring about the day’s specialties. Make sure to save room for desert, crispy banana split is incredible.

Overall, Steak 48 provides an incredible steakhouse experience for a new generation to appreciate. Steak 48 is owned by Jeffrey and Michael Mastro, their father, Dennis, and partner Scott Troilo.

“Much like a new home, we really see this restaurant as a perfect reflection of who we are today,” said Jeffrey Mastro.

Bon Appétit!

Katana Chicago Amazes with Japanese Menu

It’s official. Chicago is becoming the new foodie capital of the country. And in the race to the finish line, Katana Chicago takes home the gold for the best culinary experience in the Windy City.

Katana Chicago opens from the Innovative Dining Group which has a tremendous reputation with a portfolio consisting of Roku, Boa, Sushi Roku, and Robata Bar. Travel Today had the opportunity to sample the newcomer.

The 13,000+ square feet interiors of Chicago’s Katana take a page from the Los Angeles location, which has already become a smash hit and favorite of Hollywood’s entertainment elite. This cross-country trip for the Katana brand brings the best of the menu and service you would come to expect from this incredible dining experience. The interiors are stunning – you are literally dining in a piece of artwork. Adding to the experience, the service is five star.

Executive chef Jose “Junior” Melendez has designed a culinary road trip that surprises and delights. Appetizers that pull inspiration from the local scene, and entrees that will leave you well fed.

Katana captures the essence of authentic Robatayaki, a cutting-edge form of traditional Japanese BBQ, offering the best of both worlds—exceptional raw and cooked cuisine. Guests can look forward to customary styles of Japanese comfort food, featuring robata-style dishes, alongside innovative sushi masterpieces. Ages ago, Japanese fishermen prepared their catch over an open flame and shared with others on oars passed from boat to boat. Katana honors the centuries-old method with a menu that boasts Japanese tapas for sharing, and expertly blends the art of cooking traditions with modern Asian cuisine for a coveted flavor profile.

Katana also features a premium Omakase program, in which the chef customizes a menu for each guest. An impressive beverage program rounds out the dining experience featuring any array of sake samplers, a handpicked list of wines, various Japanese beers, whisky and cocktails mixed with premium, seasonal ingredients and fresh-squeezed juices curated by Michael Simon.

The Hampton Social: A Coastal Getaway in the heart of Chicago

Chicago may be 800 miles west of the Atlantic, but when you step into Hampton Social every care in the world will melt away – you will be transported on vacation to the beaches of Montauk where a coastal escape and journey await.

The Hampton Social is owned by the Parker Restaurant Group which also owns Bassment and Mahalo. The interiors are straight out of a luxury Cape Cod estate – white trims, and nautical props complete the ambiance.

During our visit, my friend and I got lost in conversation and stayed much longer than we had planned. This is the type of charming atmosphere that Parker created. You feel right at home in the cozy environment! When you visit, you must order the Pesto Pizza and Chicken & Waffles. You will be met with a unique tastes on classics.

Live acoustic performances take place on a stage throughout the week (schedule on their site). My friend commented how the performances take place at the “perfect volume” – not too overbearing!

With the mantra “Rosé all day” proudly displayed in the center of the bar, many of our readers will feel right at home. Be on the lookout for a new location opening in the Burr Ridge neighborhood this fall.

Carnival Sets Sail To Cuba

MIAMI – Today, Carnival Cruise lines set sail for a historic trip from Miami to Cuba, becoming the first major cruise line to begin service to Cuba since the historic policy shift that happened in 2015.

“We are humbled and honored to offer a one-of-a-kind Cuban experience to our travelers,” said Russell.

Seven-day itineraries on Carnival Corporation’s Fathom brand depart from PortMiami on Sundays at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time. The ship will arrive at its first destination, Havana, the following morning (Monday) at 11 a.m. Eastern Time. The MV Adonia returns to its homeport, PortMiami, at 7:30 a.m. Eastern Time Sunday.

. This marks the first time in over 50 years a cruise ship is approved to sail from the United States to Cuba.

“Our Carnival Corporation and Fathom brand teams have worked closely with Cuba throughout this process and we are thrilled to begin regular sailings to Cuba from Miami starting on May 1, 2016,” said Tara Russell, president of Carnival Corporation’s new Fathom brand. “We have been told that we will be the first cruise line to sail from the U.S. to Cuba with our historic inaugural sailing.”

“We are excited about Cuban approval and are ready to take travelers there through an extraordinary guest experience on the beautiful MV Adonia,” said Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival Corporation. “This is a historic opportunity, and we know there is pent-up demand amongst Americans who want to experience Cuba. We believe there is no better way to experience so much of Cuba in seven days. Everyone who sails with us with Fathom to Cuba will have a very special, rewarding and enriching experience with our Fathom brand.”

Fathom Cuban itineraries feature three ports of call

During each sailing, Carnival Corporation through its Fathom brand initially will visit Havana, Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba, three ports of call for which Carnival Corporation has obtained berthing approval.

As part of this historic sailing in this inaugural year, travelers will enjoy an exciting Cuban experience and will sail aboard the 704-passenger MV Adonia, where they can choose to partake in onboard experiences, including Cuban- and Caribbean-inspired music and film options, as well as Cuban-inspired menu options.

Special onboard programming will include a wide variety of activities covering an array of interests, ranging from an orientation to Cuba’s history, customs and culture, to geographic-inspired entertainment, to casual and fun personal enrichment activities, to conversational Spanish lessons, to guided sessions with the Fathom team.

Amazing Views at Kimpton’s Surfcomber Miami

The Deal

Hotel: Surfcomber Miami Beach

List Price: $499<

HotelTonight Price: $229 (Included Ocean Front Upgrade)

Two weeks ago I found myself on the tarmac of Miami International Airport, about 30 minutes from South Beach, with no hotel booked. While some frequent flyers might have their stomach churn at the thought of not having a hotel booked upon arriving into a new city – for me – it is a feeling of liberation.

I pulled out my phone and fired up a new app called HotelTonight to book my hotel room. While I was aware of the app, there were few circumstances that would have warranted its use. Today was a perfect example.

The options were plenty and I eventually settled on booking a Kimpton, The Surfcomber, which is located in the heart of South Beach. The booking process from the app was extremely easy. You enter in the city you are traveling too, and provide the immediate dates (tonight or tomorrow) and it displays the best options.

The Surfcomber Miami: A Good Deal?

When you book on a OTA or discount travel site, you generally expect the worst possible room. In this case, the Surfcomber room was absolutely spectacular. It had a private balcony that overlooked the hotel’s pool and breathtaking view. I had a gorgeous King Bed and the room was spacious.

The Surfcomber Miami is a stunning hotel that has wonderful service, and excellent accommodations.

Overall, my experience with the HotelTonight app was fantastic. I highly recommend it to anyone.

A Perfect Weekend on St. John Island

traveltodaytv cruz bay vacation tips st. john island st thomasEnjoy the stunning  beaches of St. John Island in the U.S. Virgin Islands – a relaxing getaway that is less than 4 hours from New York City. Travel Today explored the islands for a weekend. The outbound flight was operated by United Airlines and took off on time at 7:00 am on Friday morning, To get to St. John Island, you first fly through St. Thomas Island which is the main airport servicing the U.S. Virgin Islands.

When you land into St. Thomas – make sure to stop by the welcome center for a free welcome shot of the famous rum – which is distilled in St. Thomas. Delicious. Next, follow the signs for the taxi station where a 10 dollar taxi will take you to the Red Hookferry station, about 30 minutes on the opposite end of the island. The ferry service runs on the hour, and is a easy and pleasant way to journey to St. John Island.

Once on the ferry, you will be able to take stunning landscape photographs of the island from a far. The ferry ride only takes 20 minutes, and you arrive into the Cruz Bay dock on St. John. Our biggest mistake was not immediately renting a jeep, or even making a reservation for one. It is our recommendation to book a Jeep on the island well in advance – as they tend to sell out quickly. The rental rate is about 70.00 a day, including taxes.

Our accommodations were located on Hillcrest Street at the Hillcrest Guest House, St. John, US Virgin Islands- upon arriving, we were greeted by the owner of the charming bed and breakfast which provides beautiful views of the entire Cruz Bay area from its perch on top of a hill. The room was spacious and had a fully stocked fridge and minibar that was included in the room rate. The bed was extremely comfortable and the room was a perfect alternative to the more standard hotel accommodations on the island.

When visiting St. John island, there is a lot to see and do. We recommend taking a day trip in your Jeep driving the entire costal road, and pausing at each lookout point for a beautiful photo. A must-see for any adventure fan is the hike to Ram’s Head. It is about a 4 mile roundtrip hike, that will take you through two beaches (one sand, and one stone), and up a hill where you will have stunning views of the entire island.

There are many shopping and dining options on the island. We recommend having a drink on the beach at Beach Bar during the sunset, and breakfast at Jake’s. For fine dining, we had dinner at Zozo’s which was lackluster and generic. The portion sizes were small and underwhelming. The service was average.

Overall, our trip to St. John Island was a complete success. It was the perfect weekend getaway from a snowy cold weekend in New York City. We highly recommend it to any traveller.
